Cinema Arts Festival Houston's Executive Director Trish Rigdon always had great expectations for the neighborhood east of downtown Houston. "Back in the day...even back in the 80's, I would see all the warehouses and could only see potential," muses Rigdon, a native Houstonian. Rigdon and her husband Kevin Rigdon have lived in EaDo the last 5 years, first at the Alexan Lofts on Runnels, and since August of this year in a new home in the Capitol Oaks development. For the Rigdons, the choice to move to the neighborhood was simple, as Trish explains, "We love downtown living and didn't want home maintenance issues because we travel so much, which is why we originally moved to the loft on Runnels. We love our new townhome and think the location couldn't be a better fit for our lifestyle." As Executive Director of this month's 2010 Cinema Arts Festival Houston, put on by the Houston Cinema Arts Society, Rigdon is excited that three of the festival's screenings and live music performances will take place very near EaDo at the Frenetic Theatre at 5102 Navigation Blvd. She'd like to see more live theatres in EaDo (currently, there is one live theatre space in the area, the Silver House Theatre, featured below) and is very excited about the new light rail line being built. "I can't wait to be able to ride the rail to shop, go to the theatre, dine...it can't get here fast enough for me!"

Indeed, the light rail is one of Trish's favorite perks-to-be of living in EaDo, saying she and her husband purposefully chose a home that would be right on the line. They found the perfect fit, with the nearest stop a mere two blocks away, visible from the balcony off her living room. The Rigdons also enjoy hitting up Minute Maid Park and Discovery Green, as well as the abundance of restaurant supply stores in the neighborhood. According to Trish, her husband Kevin is, "somewhat of a chef," so she loves buying his Christmas presents there! The Union Station/Columbia Tap bike trail just a block from their back door is an additional plus.

In addition to her work with the Cinema Arts Festival Houston, Trish stays busy as director of two Houston theatre companies, Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company and Phoenix Theatre, Inc. Her husband Kevin is an acclaimed Scenic and Lighting Designer who works with the Alley Theatre and is Head of Graduate Design at UH School of Theatre and Dance. Their work takes them all over the world, so they're always thankful for EaDo's quick proximity to both of Houston's major airports. The exotic locales they visit aren't too much of a pull, though. Trish explains, "I often work in New York City, Los Angeles, and London, but I wouldn't live anywhere else."

The Cinema Arts Festival Houston is the only U.S. festival devoted to films by and about artists in the visual, performing and literary arts. The 2010 Cinema Arts Festival Houston program involves collaboration among many of Houston's extraordinary film and arts institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Menil Collection; and many others. The film festival runs from November 10 through 14, 2010, and passes are available for individual days or the complete week. For more information on the Cinema Arts Festival Houston, visit www.cinemartsociety.org.

Just east of Highway 59, behind the George R. Brown Convention Center, sits The Silver House Theatre, a multicultural performance art community center for production, education and training of emerging artists. Now seven years old, the Silver House Theatre is dedicated to producing and developing contemporary playwrights' work while cultivating Houston's next generation of theater artists. Led by Director/ Playwright Reginald Edmund, Silver House Theatre is located at 1107 Chartres Street in the heart of EaDo.
