On Saturday and Sunday October 15-16, the Eastwood Civic Association is hosting its annual Historic Home Tour, featuring the neighborhood’s distinctive Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Foursquare, and Mission architecture.  As one of Houston’s first master-planned subdivisions, designed and developed in 1913 by William A. Wilson, who also brought Houston the Woodland Heights area, Eastwood has one of our city’s largest intact collections of these beautiful architectural styles.  Now experiencing a renaissance, EaDo’s neighbor, The East End, is booming with an influx of new residents drawn by the near-downtown location, great schools, and neighborhood charm.  The METRO Light Rail expansion into the area is certainly aiding in the area’s upswing.  Tickets are $12 online at www.eastwoodcivicassociation.org/hometour.html and will be available on the days of the home tour for $15 at Eastwood Park (5020 Harrisburg, 77011).

Something bewitching has been brewing in Houston for over 60 years. In 1950, successful Houston business owner Morty Frankel brought his own unique brand of enchantment to the city with Morty's Magic Art. Morty's 808 Texas Avenue shop quickly established itself as a beloved part of the downtown fabric, offering Houstonians an escape from the ordinary with an impressive selection of tricks, illusions and jokes, and, perhaps most magical of all, Morty's spirited and playful partner; his wife! Morty's wife Leola soon became a permanent fixture at the shop when she stepped in to fulfill a request from a long time customer in search of a new stage costume. A trained seamstress with boundless creativity, Leola's first creation was a hit, and requests poured in. Business boomed as Leola's costumes started lining the aisles, and the Frankel's inventory soon outgrew their space. Morty's Magic Art became Frankel's Costume Shop, and moved to Fannin Street (in the present day Medical Center). The Frankel's once again packed up shop in the 1970's and moved further down Fannin, this time closer to downtown as they continued to expand. In 1976, Leola sold the business to her oldest son Lonnie, who, alongside his wife Terrie, increased the businesses' costume inventory to over 57,000 rental units.

Frankel's Costume secured a reputation as one of the South's largest resources for magic supplies, stage makeup, and clown and theatrical supplies when they made their biggest move yet, to EaDo, in 2001. Today, Frankel's Costume Company's Polk Street location boasts 40,000 square feet of space (and occupies an entire city block!) under the leadership of a new generation of Frankels. Sons Aaron and Eric now oversee operations of Frankel's 60,000 costumes, magic tricks, ventriloquist dummies, Halloween masks, wigs, stage makeup and clown supplies. October is undoubtedly a big month for the Frankel's, who seek to make your Halloween shopping as easy and secure as possible, both in-store and online. The physical store is stocked to the brim with every costume in every category imaginable; making a trip to Frankel's a truly memorable Houston Halloween experience! For those who prefer to shop from the convenience of their home, or those last minute shoppers who just can't decide between the ghost or goblin costume, Frankel's even offers same day shipping on online orders placed before 2p.m. that day. Frankel’s is located at 2801 Polk Street and store hours are expanded this month to better serve your costuming needs! Through October 31st, hours are: M-F 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Sun. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more info and online sales visit www.frankelcostume.com
