In this week’s digest: Houston has new champions, information on financial relief for small businesses, and updates on in-person classes as the first day of school approaches for local students.
Houston Dash win their first championship
The Houston Dash won their first championship in franchise history after beating the Chicago Stars 2-0. Midfielder Sophie Schmidt scored the opening goal and forward Shea Groom brought another home at the 85th minute to lock in the win.
In celebration of their historic win, the Dash hosted a drive-by celebration with fans Thursday, July 30 to accommodate the state’s social distancing orders. They were also joined by Judge Lina Hidalgo and Mayor Turner as they officially declared July 30, 2020 as Houston Dash Day.
Small Business Economic Relief
The Houston City Council has approved the City’s Small Business Economic Relief Program (SBERP). The program will be funded by the City’s allocated CARES Act 2020 funds. They’ll be accepting applications within the next two weeks. You can view the requirements to apply here.
Last Friday, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Judge Lina Hidalgo announced they will delay in-person classes for all public and non-religious private schools until September 8. The order comes amidst concerns to protect students, teachers, and staff from further exposure and spread of COVID-19. Additionally, each school system will also be required to submit a “written plan with safety and health protocols for resuming in-person instruction and extracurricular activities to the Local Health Authority” by Friday, August 21, 2020.
